MARU: Redefining Japanese Cuisine with Innovative Design

Creating a Unique Dining Experience

Maru, a commercial space and restaurant designed by Cheng-Chen Chen, challenges traditional notions of Japanese cuisine by incorporating innovative design elements.

The inspiration for Maru came from the idea of using materials to design a space, much like a chef designs dishes with ingredients. In a departure from traditional commercial spaces, Chen collaborated with another designer to create a sustainable business space that breaks new ground in the industry. This unique approach not only challenges the role of designers but also allows them to coexist and enjoy the honor together.

One of the standout features of Maru is the wooden framed window next to the entrance. Serving as a showcase, it creates a brand new visual effect that turns the notion of mysterious aspects of Japanese cuisine on its head. This unexpected design element immediately captures the attention of guests and sets the tone for the dining experience.

Inside Maru, an octagonal dining table right after the entrance gate adds to the innovative design. This table features a lift mechanism, allowing it to be utilized as a display case when in the lower position. This versatility not only adds functionality to the space but also showcases the attention to detail and thoughtfulness of the design.

The interior design of Maru is characterized by the use of construction materials to create an ambiance reminiscent of a coastal reef. The walls are adorned with graphs and lines, creating a unique atmosphere that allows guests to fully enjoy the original taste of the food. The absence of magnified lines and intensified colors adds to the simplicity and elegance of the space.

With a compact size of 15 square meters, Maru proves that great design can be achieved even in limited spaces. The careful arrangement of elements and the thoughtful use of materials create a dining experience that is both intimate and visually stunning.

Maru was completed in 2015 in Taiwan and has since become a symbol of innovative design in the restaurant industry. It has successfully challenged the traditional image of a Japanese sushi bar by breaking away from the typical design elements and creating a space that is both inviting and intriguing.

The design of Maru was not without its challenges. In order to shorten the distance between guests and the culinary experience, the traditional image of a sushi bar was broken. Instead of having a refrigerator on the counter, a large French window was installed at the entrance, unveiling the mysteries of Japanese cuisine and creating a sense of anticipation for what lies inside.

Maru's innovative design has garnered recognition and accolades. In 2016, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes Maru's outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, as well as its ability to create a remarkable level of excellence and evoke positive emotions in its guests.
